Got the Sunday NY Times this morning. That's noteworthy because dude, the thing costs $5 these days!! But it had several interesting articles I wanted to read, including one about the US pressuring the OAS to create this committee to monitor the "quality" of democracy in Latin America. Quality as defined by the US, of course. Which has a huge tendency to confuse democracy (a political system) with capitalism (an economic one). Anyway, most countries see this as a thinly disguised way to put pressure on Venezuela which is being too democratic in choosing their own leaders which may not be to the liking of the US (how dare they??!)
Also, our friends down at the Coalition of Immokalee Workers got some coverage when they announced that after their success in pressuring Taco Bell to do some good things for the farmworkers (increasing the pittance wages, 40-45 cents for a 32-pound bucket, meaning they have to pick 2 tons of tomatoes to earn $50/day!) they are now targeting other fast food giants to follow suit. They have sent letters to MacDonald's, Burger King and Subway. You can read the story online here and the Coalition is asking supporters to send letters to these fast food kingpins encouraging them to do the right thing. A PDF file of sample letters and address can be found here. Please consider writing one. It's a good thing. You'll feel better about yourself if you do! :-)

Thanks for the very useful tip. I'll be writing my own letter shortly. Great post.
